Big Basin

Today (August 13th, I am a little behind) we went to Big Basin Redwoods State Park. This park is the oldest State Park in California; it was established in 1902. Big Basin is also home to the largest continuous stand of ancient coastal redwoods south of San Francisco. These trees are huge.

This one greeted us on our way into the park. It looks like it was burned. And for some reason it became hollow. I am still trying to figure out why it is like that. Lots of trees in the park look like this. They must have had a huge fire at some point.

We hiked up to the top of one of the peaks and got a cool view of the area. It took us about 2 hours to get up there and 2 hours to go back down. The girls packed a lunch for us to eat at the top. It hit the spot.

California is a very beautiful place to explore.
